Not a time to hunker down.

Below is the outline of the sermon from yesterday. This is another blog entry about the lessons from Psalm 20 in these interesting economic times. God is not in despair over the economic situation the world is facing. It is a time for the church to step up to the plate and proclaim the truth that the Psalmist gave us:

Psalm 20:1 In times of trouble, may the LORD answer your cry. May the name of the God of Jacob keep you safe from all harm. 2 May he send you help from his sanctuary and strengthen you from Jerusalem. 3 May he remember all your gifts and look favorably on your burnt offerings. Interlude 4 May he grant your heart's desires and make all your plans succeed. 5 May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory and raise a victory banner in the name of our God. May the LORD answer all your prayers. 6 Now I know that the LORD rescues his anointed king. He will answer him from his holy heaven and rescue him by his great power. 7 Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the LORD our God. 8 Those nations will fall down and collapse, but we will rise up and stand firm. 9 Give victory to our king, O LORD! Answer our cry for help.

The Matthew Henry Commentary makes this observation:

“Our first step to victory in spiritual warfare is to trust only in the mercy and grace of God; all who trust in themselves will soon be cast down. Believers triumph in God, and his revelation of himself to them, by which they distinguish themselves from those that live without God in the world. Those who make God and his name their praise, may make God and his name their trust.”

The Psalm 20 Four Principles of staying out there rather than hunkering down:

Distress is a reality of life

Help will arrive from God

God will remember where you are

The final result will be great for you

Your future is bright if your trust is in God.
