I had the privilege to attend a seminar last night for school board members. It was part of the board learning experience that is designed to help us to focus on and commit to excellence in the education of our children. One of the quotes of the night came from John Maxwell, one of my favorites when it comes to leadership and the team concept. The quote dealt with adversity that can show up in life:
“People don’t really know whether they are committed to something until they face adversity. Struggle strengthens a person’s resolve. Adversity fosters commitment, and commitment fosters hard work. And the more you work on something, the less likely you are to give up on it.”
The fact that we value what we struggle is a time proven truth. The early church in the book of Acts grew when adversity got so difficult that the church had to move out from Jerusalem and into the rest of the world. Adversity moves us from the comfort area of status quo and forces us to new venues and viewpoints in life. If you have no adversity in your life, you are too comfortable. I jokingly tell people that my job as a pastor is to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable.
Adversity? Bring it on !!!!
